Shipping Container Desiccants

A common question we get asked is “will my container get condensation?” Luckily we have the answer!

All our shipping containers are sold wind & watertight guaranteed. But even if the containers are sat static on a site, because they are all essentially big metal boxes, when they cool overnight they will sweat and you will find that condensation forms on the inside of the roof as the container cools. This can cause problems if your storing expensive equipment, paperwork, textiles, foods or any other moisture sensitive goods.

From our experience we find that the majority of customers’ containers will form condensation. From containers on farms, industrial estates and all the way up to multinational companies. Even the big boys are not above a sweaty container! Budget Shipping Containers have recently supplied goods and services for household names such as McDonalds, Wagamamas, Silverstone Racing Circuit, Dr Oetker, TGI Fridays and EDF Energy!

And, needless to say, Budget Shipping Containers was on hand to provide options and solutions! They have now purchased from us a good number of shipping container dessicants in the form of “Damp Sticks” for their various UK sites.

We offer our three ranges of shipping container desiccants. Moisture Traps, Bone Dry Dampsticks and Sea Dry Hooks.  They are very similar products that absorb moisture in storage units and containers alike. The only real difference is the brand name, personal preference if you like, but we find both do an equally good job. Designed to be hung on the container wall (so it wont get in the way or take up any valuable storage space) they are a really simple and effective method of protecting your cargo in storage from potential moisture problems.

ADNAMS Logo_90pc CyanAdnams Brewery on the other hand, as they were buying shipping containers from us, opted for Grafotherm prior to delivery of their containers. If shipping container desiccants like Absorpoles and Dampsticks last weeks or months, Grafotherm last years. Its a much more ‘long term’ solution to the shipping container condensation that arises,

A thin layer (only a few mm thick) of Grafotherm is applied to the inside of the roof of your container which traps and holds any moisture as it forms and prevents it dripping onto the stored goods. It doesn’t prevent the condensation forming in the same way an insulated container might, however it will be between a fifth and a tenth of the cost of a basic line and insulate option, depending on the size of your container. This insulation option is applied by our team on one of our UK sites and  the spongy substance soaks up and holds any moisture inside the container. This means it can commonly take a long time to ‘set’ (anything between a day and a fortnight) and if its still wet 3 weeks down the line, it just means its doing its job absorbing moisture.

Although these are our two most popular solutions to condensation, moisture and damp in containers we do have other options available. If you are at all storing condensation sensitive goods, in any container type please feel free to check out our article ultimate guide to shipping container condensation treatments which details a much wider range of condensation reducing options.

Once again we’d like to say a thank you to Andrew Brookes at Adnams Plc and the team at Waites and sons!
