10 Cool Shipping Container Getaways for a Socially Distant Holiday

Thanks to coronavirus, most summer holidays will look a bit different this year.  The great British ‘Staycation’ is all the rage, and self-catering accommodation in the UK is more popular than ever.

A holiday is about getting away from it all and experiencing a change of scene, so if we cannot travel as far as we’d like to, we can still look for somewhere unusual and exciting to stay.

So instead of camping in a tent or a run of the mill hotel – how about spending your summer holiday in a shipping container?

Here are the best shipping container getaways we could find in the UK – and beyond.  If you have stayed in any of these – or you know of one we have missed – we would love you to tell us all about it.

Stow Away Hotel, Waterloo, London

Tucked away in the heart of London’s South Bank lies a very cool, eco-friendly apart-hotel with rooms created from 26 repurposed shipping containers.  The self-contained suites are furbished with mini-kitchens, blackout blinds, and super king-sized beds for a comfortable and isolated night’s sleep.  You can even take advantage of a contactless check-in to avoid any unnecessary contact altogether.

The hotel takes sustainable tourism to a new level with solar panels that transfer unused electricity back to the national grid, while additional water and energy are pumped back into the hotel to create energy efficiency and reduce unnecessary waste.

Holiday Inn, Trafford City

This is a 220-bedroom modular hotel constructed from purpose-built steel containers.  The containers were stacked onsite in Event City at the Trafford Centre in Manchester in less than 3 weeks before the external cladding was added to the building.  Each container was installed with interior fixtures and fittings prior to being delivered, making this entire project resemble an extremely ambitious and larger than life scale Lego project!

Ty Cwch, Wales Ty Cwch Shipping Container Glamping

Not the first time we have mentioned this wonderful Welsh shipping container getaway, but we love the style of this super-sustainable lakeside boathouse that would make a great base for some socially distanced adventuring in the Welsh countryside.

Ty Cwch has already been recognised with a Mid-Wales Tourism award for sustainability, celebrating the “locally sourced materials, knowledge and experience” that were used to create this contemporary accommodation.

Suitable for groups up to 12 people, Ty Cwch is a fully-insulated, warm, and cosy glamping experience that will feel miles from anywhere – definitely one for a post-COVID escape!

Frank, Glamping in Donegal

We’ve never heard of a guest house that bounces before, but that is just one of the surprises that await guests at this stylish bolthole on the west coast of Ireland. The designer of this amazing accommodation purchased the original 12-metre (40 foot) container for just €4000 in 2016 and transformed it into a beautiful holiday home that is built partly on solid ground and partly on stilts over a private lake.  It is a feat of clever design and shows that shipping containers really can provide a blank canvas to create something unique – without undertaking a Grand Design style building project that could take thousands of pounds and many weeks, months, or years to complete.

Glamness Luxury Containers, Inverness

Glam by name, and glam by nature! These luxuriously converted shipping containers offer an amazing ‘glamping’ experience just 5 minutes from the centre of Inverness, and 10 minutes from the famous shores of Loch Ness.  What a location, and what a place to escape to!

These 7 shipping containers – named after Scottish legends like William Wallace and Rob Roy – have been converted to a luxuriously high-standard for an adult-only escape (no children allowed!).  The interiors are flooded with natural daylight thanks to the glass frontages which deliver incredible views over the surrounding countryside.

Each container is fitted with its own private terrace, private bathroom with shower, and balcony.  When can we book?

Container Air B&B in a private meadow, Devon

This beautifully converted shipping container lies in 10 acres of private meadow in the Exeter countryside. With a king-size bed, natural daylight pouring through the large full-length glass doors, and even a log-burner, this is a perfect hideaway for a Devonshire escape.  The owner has even fitted a kitchen, and fully working bathroom – we could quite happily move in for a few nights (or longer!)

The Chillout Container, Scotland

This converted shipping container in South Lanarkshire is definitely a place to chill out (though Edinburgh is just 20 minutes away for added liveliness). The floor to ceiling windows welcome in plenty of light, and the well-equipped kitchen and en-suite shower room mean that all essential amenities are covered!  There is also a south-facing decking area (made from reclaimed wood to continue the sustainable theme) where couples can enjoy the evening sunshine over a glass of wine or two.  Perfect!

Shakas House, St Ives, Cornwall

Cornwall is a favourite staycation spot for many and finding a place to stay in Cornwall this summer may prove to be tricky. Given the chance, we would book a few nights in this cosy converted shipping container hidden away in half an acre of rural St Ives.  It might be small, but it has everything you need for those quiet shipping container getaways in the Cornish countryside.  A fully integrated kitchen, a bathroom with a full-length bath, and a log burner for chillier evenings!  Another amazing example of how a shipping container is a perfect size for a self-contained self-catering accommodation unit without breaking the bank – if you are clever with the space available, and make the most of natural daylight and sensibly sourced materials.

Quadrum Ski and Yoga Resort, Georgia

If you decide that a winter escape from the UK is on the cards and you are missing the slopes, how about booking a skiing and yoga shipping container getaway in the Georgian mountains?  This amazing 4* star resort consists of 21 bedrooms, a spa, swimming pool, and restaurant – all made entirely and sustainably from repurposed shipping containers.

As with so many shipping container hotels, the emphasis of the design and build is on sustainability and remaining environmentally friendly.  The materials used in construction were recycled and locally produced, while the surrounding landscape has remained carefully untouched.

The 21 rooms offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, which you can admire from your jacuzzi bath.  And guests can enjoy dishes created with local produce cooked by local chefs in the hotel restaurant.

This place is cool – both in the literal sense and in its ethos.  Definitely one for the bucket list.

Winebox Hotel – Chile

Our final stop on this tour of shipping container hotels is another far-flung retreat. Here we travel to South America, to the Winebox Hotel in Chile (we like the sound of this one already).

“Winebox Valparaiso offers sustainable lodging with wines and attitude”

This incredible ‘recycled’ hotel consists of 25 repurposed shipping containers and a total of 70% recycled materials.  The furniture and fittings in this family-run hotel are and were created by re-using wood, pallets, and other items that would have been burned if not used.  The hotel owners are also passionate about reusing wastewater, and the hotel is powered with the oil obtained from the residues of the coffee beans they use.

The hotel is a wonderful Latin American find, with an amazing story.  Another one we are adding to our ever-growing list of shipping container getaways we must try.
