James Taylor, the American guitarist and singer-songwriter, is one of the best selling music artists of all time. He has sold over over 100 million records, won five Grammy awards and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has even been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama!
Taylor is highly respected in the music industry as a ‘genuine’ musician, largely resisting electronic instruments and effects, preferring instead to find ‘real’ sounds for his music. He has been hugely influential, the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Alison Krauss and Keith Urban all citing him as significant to their own sounds. When he needed an echo chamber for his home-studio he knew exactly what he wanted, and built it in a repurposed 40ft shipping container!
Shipping Container Acoustics
Before the invention of electronic sound effects recording engineers would use special rooms called ‘Echo Chambers’ to add ‘reverb’ to a sound. Reverb is an effect that makes a voice or instrument sound like it is in an actual physical space. The rooms would be constructed of materials with particular sound reflective properties, and would have walls and ceilings shaped to bounce sound waves in particular ways. These echo chambers each had their own sonic signature, one of the best being at Abbey Road Studios in London, used by both Taylor and the Beatles.
Taylor recognised that a shipping container could easily be modified to make an echo chamber, and had the added benefit of being mobile. In the video he takes us for a tour of his Echo Chamber Shipping Container, and we can see what changes were made to give the acoustic properties that he wanted.
Shipping Container Echo Chamber
James recorded his 2015 album ‘Before This World’ using the shipping container echo chamber, which went on to become his first American number one album. His next album, ‘American Standard’ was released in February 2020 and entered the chart at number 4, making Taylor the first artist to have top ten albums in six different decades and confirming his place amongst the Rock and Roll greats.
