Custom Built Multi Use Container Pavilion for Sports Centre

Shipping containers are ideal for sports venues as they can be easily adapted to suit different requirements, without taking up a large amount of space, and they are very cost-effective too.

This project required a customised set of shipping containers for use as on-site storage, with additional space for a catering area which would be used as a scoring box to be used during cricket matches.  This might sound like a big ask, but a few expertly adapted shipping containers were able to fit the brief perfectly!

Below are details of this specialist container conversion project which was completed by the team at our London yard.  It is a superb example of what is available to our customers who need shipping containers for multi-use projects.

Modular shipping containers for multi-storey use

You can source modular shipping containers in multiple size configurations to create a multitude of flexible spaces.  If ground space is limited, modular containers can be stacked on top of each other to create multi-storey spaces, and with the addition of a shipping container staircase, your new containers will be easily accessible while using half of the space needed if they were arranged next to each other.

This particular project brief opted for a multi-storey modular container set up.  The ground floor level container would be used for storage purposes whilst the top level required a container converted for use as a catering unit which would double up as a scoring box for cricket matches taking place at the ground.

Placing the storage containers at ground level saves having to lug any heavy equipment up and down a staircase whilst you are safe in the knowledge that the container door is nice and secure thanks to the fitted lockbox (padlock cover).  A lockbox makes it especially difficult for any would-be intruder to gain entry.  Shipping Container lockboxes are fitted as standard to new (one-trip) containers – as used for this project – or they can be purchased to fit onto older used containers.   View our range of container lockboxes here.

The storage containers at ground level were fully insulated by the conversion team, providing additional protection to the contents against any damp and mildew.

Shipping container electrics

All containers used in this modular project were fitted with individual electrical circuitry.  Therefore all lights and electrics in the separate containers can be individually switched on or off, rather than having one switch for all.  This saves on energy use and costs in the long-term.  Perhaps a minor detail to the average onlooker, but one of those insightful little extras that an expert conversion team would think of!

The container catering unit on the top storey was fully fitted with electrics and portable air-conditioning units.

Shipping container catering units

Shipping containers are an excellent option for a portable, low-cost catering unit.  Containers can be easily adapted for catering use in the conversion yard before being easily lifted to place on the customer’s site.

For this particular project, the catering until was designed to be a multi-purpose space but it still required all of the spec required to be able to cater and serve from one space.  The container was fitted with internal electrics and fully lined with Melamine.  Melamine lined shipping containers are ideal for use in catering as the Melamine protects against condensation, and also provides a smart and hygienic wipe-clean surface.  This is essential in the catering industry for any food preparation area.

This catering unit was also fitted with a safe, non-slip floor (another essential feature for a catering unit when spillages are more than likely), and a secure roller-shutter to be used as a service hatch when the catering unit is in use.

Final additions included portable air-conditioning units and a high-security access door to protect the internal equipment at all times.

External container modifications

This project included some additional exterior modifications for the safety of the users, which look pretty smart too!

A balcony area and railings were added and paint-matched around the top level of the unit, and wooden decking was laid around the upper-level catering unit to create a superb looking finish and a great space for spectators and customers to keep an eye on the action on the cricket pitch below.

A shipping container staircase was added to the side of the unit. This is not pictured here but some examples of staircases are available on our website via the link above.

The final finish to this project included additional structural supports to the top rails on the bottom containers to allow the top unit to sit ‘across’ the containers, as pictured.

The entire project used 20ft new (one trip) shipping containers which were specially sourced to match the club colours of the customer!

Pre-build and installation

A huge benefit of using a professional shipping container conversion specialist is that the whole project was pre-built in our yard to ensure there was no need for any cutting, welding, or other disruptive construction work at the customer’s site.

All individual elements of the project were pre-built in our yard prior to delivery and installation.  The whole project included preparatory groundworks at the site.  And best of all?  The onsite installation was completed in just one day!
