Shipping Containers and the Olympics
The Tokyo Olympics are finally underway and more than 10,000 athletes from around the world have travelled to Japan to compete in over 339 sporting events. Shipping Containers from across the globe were dispatched to Tokyo weeks before the Olympic opening ceremony to ensure that the teams from the 206 competing nations had everything they needed – from sports equipment and uniforms to PPE and home comforts such as bedding and – according to reports – 45,000 tea bags (for Team GB of course!)
Shipping Containers helped to get the right sports equipment to the Olympics, and they can be used across the world in a variety of ways relating to Olympic sports and events.
Here we have listed a few of our own projects where shipping containers have been used to support sports clubs across the UK. And they happen to be Olympic sports too!
Equestrian 
Shipping Containers are extremely popular in the equestrian industry and are often put to good use as feed stores thanks to their excellent value and weatherproof storage capacity. They can also be converted into secure tack rooms with a few simple modifications such as shipping container racking for storage, and high security lock boxes and alarm systems to keep valuable equipment safe from intruders.
Archery
Every aspiring Archer needs a club to practice their sport! And back in 2016, we were very pleased to supply and deliver a refurbished 20ft shipping container to Battle Archery Ltd in Bristol for use as an office, and equipment store. Battle Archery is a little bit different from traditional archery – and is an exciting game combining archery with paintballing using bows and foam-tipped safety arrows. For this project, we provided a very smartly refurbished 20ft container with an additional lockable, high-security personnel door and security shutter window, finished off with a custom repaint in RAL6007 (a superb, camo-style green to compliment the combat style of the venue).
Cycling
Cycling is one of the UK’s most popular sports, and one we usually perform well in at Olympic level! We have had the opportunity to supply shipping containers to several cycling clubs, which were in need of safe and secure storage for their valuable bikes and other equipment. In 2017, we delivered a refurbished 40ft shipping container to Cycling Club Hackney with appropriate fittings added along one side of the container so that the club could attach their own cycle rack once we had successfully delivered and installed their container onto their site.
Prior to this, we also delivered a custom-made 27ft refurbished shipping container to Unique, a part of the Limited Edition Cycling Club based in Greenwich and Blexley, in London. Unique specialises in providing more ‘unique’ bicycles for individuals who have difficulties with riding a conventional bike. They required a unique storage container to match their mission where they could safely keep their bikes and other equipment. As the available space was relatively tight, a standard 20ft or 40ft container could not fulfil the brief, so our clever team were able to create an extra special 27ft container by cutting down a standard 40ft container and fitting a newly constructed set of flat panel doors. We completed the job with a custom repaint in the customer’s choice of colour! A great result all round!
Football
Euro 2020 gave us the perfect opportunity to explain why Shipping Containers and Football are the perfect match! As well as providing cost-effective, secure equipment storage for grassroots football clubs, shipping containers can be transformed into changing rooms, ticket offices, and even spectator stands.
Boxing 
Boxing gyms are packed full of fighting fit athletes who need plenty of specialist equipment and a suitable place to train, and shipping containers can come in very handy in more ways than you might expect. They provide an excellent secure storage option for punch bags, weights and other equipment, but shipping containers can also be converted into boxing gyms too! A side-opening container would be an ideal option for a shipping container gym with space to stack equipment along one side, a re-enforced steel ceiling to hang punch bags, and a fully opening side to allow plenty of light and air whilst training.
We recently provided some support to one of our own local boxing clubs, Bodyshot Boxing Redditch – not with a shipping container this time – instead, we were proud to sponsor their new punch bags! Hopefully, they will help to train up some UK Olympic boxing stars of the future!
Sailing 
Olympic sailing is one of Team GB’s strongest events – in fact, Team GB has won more sailing medals at the Olympic Games than any other nation – that’s 58 medals in total (to date!). All of those successful sailors and budding stars of the future need a sailing club where they can hone their skills, and those sailing clubs need to have access to suitable storage for their bulky and valuable equipment. We recently had the pleasure of delivering two beautifully refurbished 20ft shipping containers to Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club which are now perfectly positioned and ideally placed on-site for easy access, secure storage, close to the water!
