How to Run a Click & Collect Service from a Shipping Container

Click and Collect services became hugely popular during the Covid19 pandemic. Lockdowns changed the way we shop and socialise, and whilst we hope things will return to ‘normal’ as restrictions relax – Click and Collect is a service option that is here to stay.  In this article, we look at how businesses can run click and collect services from a shipping container.  Perhaps it will inspire you to do the same!

Why is Click and Collect so good for businesses?

What’s not to like about Click and Collect? It is quick, simple, convenient – and for businesses, it is relatively inexpensive to set up  – although there are ways to upgrade your service if you want to (such as high-tech apps for ordering and payment).

Many smaller businesses may struggle for space when serving their click and collect customers. If you can’t let customers into your premises due to space restrictions, or if you want to keep buy-in and takeout customers completely separate, you may need to extend your site in order to accommodate a click and collect service.  And this is where shipping containers can prove to be extremely handy!

Converted Shipping Container for Pharmacy collections

Back in March 2020 at the start of the coronavirus lockdown, we delivered a converted shipping container to Melksham in Wiltshire to a pharmacy that needed extra space to safely dispense an influx of prescriptions.  The shipping container was placed perfectly at the service doors to the pharmacy so that staff could take prescriptions and other orders out of the pharmacy and into the container from which, customers could be served through the security windows. This simple but clever setup meant that staff could remain safer whilst serving customers with essential medicines.

A click and collect container like this would prove incredibly useful in situations where pharmacies are based inside a larger hospital building or shopping centre where the public can not enter or exit as freely as they once did.  Placing a shipping container outside of the main complex means staff can transport orders out and administer collections away from the main building.

Click and Collect Pizza from a Shipping Container

Pizza has got to be the ultimate takeaway!  And this awesome @Pizza restaurant in Edinburgh offers a drive-thru click and collect from a shipping container.  Pizzas are ordered via the @Pizza app and collected via the kiosk window.  Fitting kiosk windows into shipping containers is a popular modification that we are often asked for and there is a range of styles to choose from including a roller-shutter serving hatch and a piston operated lift-up service hatch that can also act as a shelter from the weather (as demonstrated in this 10ft container bar conversion)

Click and Collect Seafood from a Shipping Container

STACK Seaburn Container Village is a favourite destination of ours.  It’s innovative, interesting and built from our favourite source – shipping containers!

The proprietors of this newly opened container village were not to be deterred by the second 2020 lockdown and several of the resident restaurants set up a click and collect service so that customers could still enjoy their delicious local seafood.  Orders and collection times could be easily placed online and food collected safely from the business without breaking social distancing guidelines – perfect!

Customising your Click and Collect Shipping Container

Think of a shipping container as a blank canvas! These giant steel boxes can be transformed into bright and bold serving bases that perfectly complement your business and your brand.  We have already mentioned serving hatches above – these are all high-security options that can be locked safely so your contents are secure while the business is closed.  You can also add high-security personnel doors instead of opening the entire end of your container every time you want to get inside.  The original cargo doors can remain for loading and unloading, but your staff can use a more accessible entrance!

Here are some good examples of personnel doors that we have fitted to shipping containers:

Our conversion team can work closely with you to discuss other customisations for your click and collect container. You may need a specific configuration of access and service doors, or need advice on the size of container that would work best for you – our team can help you find the answers to all of these questions.
