Shipping containers make ideal garden sheds! Although traditional wooden garden sheds are still very popular, they do tend to rot over time. They are also easy to break in to and can be difficult to organise, especially when storing heavier items. One solution is to use shipping containers as garden sheds. Shipping containers are very robust, come pre-built and you can store very heavy items in them. For example, it’s easy to store a large amount of garden equipment (neatly) inside a shipping container using our heavy-duty racking systems. So no need to leave big bags of compost outside the garden shed any more!
Shipping containers have a massive loading capacity thanks to their sturdy floors that are supported by heavy-duty cross rails. On average, they’re designed to hold some 30 tones of cargo, so your average collection of garden implements and a lawn mower will pose no problem to this behemoth!
Shipping containers are also a lot more secure than most garden sheds. When fitted with a lock box and with a good quality padlock in use, it will take some form of heavy cutting gear to break into the container. This is well beyond the scope of your typical vandal or opportunist.
Every shipping container we supply also come with our 12-month wind & watertight guarantee – allowing for peace of mind over a solid, serviceable shipping container for your garden. In this guide we set out the popular options for Shipping Container Sheds.
Option 1 – Used Shipping Containers
Our range of used shipping containers are all inspected in the depot and professionally repaired prior to delivery. They are supplied with good working cargo doors, good door seals and a solid marine ply floor. Whilst these units will have picked up some dents and have minor surface rust, they can easily be repainted in our depot or you can opt to do this yourself. If you want to repaint the container, we recommend re-painting the unit in a dark colour, preferably green, as this can soften the look and help blend it into the background. Repainting will not add a significant amount of lifespan, a used shipping container should last many years as it is.
These used shipping containers are structurally sound and are wind & watertight, making them ideal for use as garden sheds. They are the cheaper option but are all sold in a solid and serviceable condition. They may be best suited for larger gardens when a potentially ugly garden shed is not an issue, or if your garden shed can be hidden behind shrubs and trees.
Option 2 – Refurbished Shipping Containers
Our refurbished shipping containers range are made to order and ideal if you have a specific size (length wise) that you require. These are very popular with gardeners and allotment groups. We use standard ISO shipping containers to produce these units. These used containers are given an external repaint in your choice of colour, and come with a lock box (padlock cover) as standard.
Depending on our yard setup in your area we may also offer our easy open / flat panel door option. These lightweight doors are made from steel at least as thick as the container walls, but they are lighter and easier to use if you have a wide range of people and abilities wanting to access the shipping container.
We can modify any of our containers to include items such as personnel doors, windows, lights and power points – so you get a shed that’s produced to meet your needs.
Option 3 – One Trip (new) Shipping Containers
One Trip (new) shipping containers will offer the best long-term value and should last some 2–3 times longer than a used shipping container. Should you decide to sell the container on at a later date, you will get a better price when compared to selling a shipping container that was classified as used when you bought it. All of our one trip containers are built in China and they have done one trip into the UK with freight in. You should expect some dents or other minor defects caused by their initial trip from China. Otherwise, they’ll be far better looking than a used unit and in near perfect condition.
New containers come with a factory fitted lock box (to protect the padlock) and when used in conjunction with one of our shipping container padlocks, the containers are very secure. Using one of our insurance rated padlocks should allow you to add the contents of any shipping container to any insurance policy already covering the site. If you want to improve security of any of our containers, you may wish to consider buying one of our shipping container alarms. Our alarms can be mains or battery powered and once activated, they will send a text to your mobile alerting you of the break in.
If you want to soften the appearance of any of the shipping container ranges listed above, we can also clad any of our containers in wood for a much smarter finish. Our cladding is all treated and we can offer a wide range of wood types to suit your site. Cladding is fitted in our yards before delivery and this does not affect the portability of the container.
This option is very popular with our office and catering pod units, but we do also regularly clad basic storage containers.
So what happens if your garden is in the middle of a row of terraced houses? Unfortunately our shipping containers need to be delivered by one of our large Hiab trucks and we need to get the truck pretty much next to the spot your shipping container needs to go. So if you want to use a shipping container as a garden shed we will need good access. While we can’t lift containers over houses or trees, we can normally lift them over an average garden fence or hedge.
Although this guide focuses on using shipping containers in place of wooden garden sheds, we also have an excellent range of flat pack containers and sheds that can be carried into position and assembled by two people. These are ideal for sites where you can’t take delivery of a full shipping container.
Option 5 – Standard flat pack garden storage sheds
Our standard flat pack containers range is a useful, flexible alternative for anyone with limited access to their garden. The units are provided de-assembled making it easy to move each panel in to the garden where the unit can be assembled in situ. Our range starts with a 2m x 2m galvanised unit (also available with a green or blue finish) through to a larger 4m x 2m unit and, if you need an even larger unit, then two units of the same width can be linked together to make an even longer container.
Although these units are ideal for garden storage, they can also be used on allotments, as tack rooms or storage of archive files etc…
These units have a 3 to 4 week lead time and can be delivered or collected from our warehouse in Surrey.
New flat pack garden sheds
With our latest range of flat pack garden sheds we offer some units that have been given the ‘secured by design’ approval following rigorous testing by the Loss Prevention Certification Board. These units are easy to assemble by two people and ideal for use where standard shipping containers can’t be delivered.
These flat pack garden sheds are designed and manufactured in the UK from heavy gauge galvanised steel with a heavy-duty floor. The units need to go on hard-standing and may be secured to this using the fixings provided.
They are available in a choice of 3-colours (green, brown and ivory) and have a lead time of about 6-weeks.
The units are delivered as a set of individual panels with all fixings and assembly instructions and, in some cases, can be supplied with storage hooks and heavy-duty eyelets to hold bungee cords in place.
These are the most popular containers for the options we’ve discussed:
