This guide is intended to give the user as much detail as possible on the spec for our flat panel or easy open container door option – a regular option on our refurbished container range.
Typically, we install a set of our flat panel doors when we produce refurbished shipping containers unless you specifically ask for the original cargo doors with your container. These are usually cheaper and easier to operate and the steel we use in the door is at least as thick as the steel used in the corrugated sides of the container, so these still offer a very tough, secure options for your storage needs.
We produce the flat panel doors in our own depots using flat sheet steel that’s about the same gauge as the metal used in the side of the shipping container. However, it is not COR-TEN steel.
Whilst cargo door sets come with rubber seals, our flat panel doors do not have any rubber seals. They have been designed so the right-hand door overlaps the left-hand door to create a basic seal and to reduce the possibility of rain ingress through the top of the doors, we install a rain guard above the doors. The steel used in the doors is at least as thick as the steel used in the side walls so this still offers a secure option.
As with all our containers, our refurbished range come with our 12-month wind & watertight guarantee.
Flat Panel Door Production
To increase the rigidity of the flat sheet steel used to make the doors, we weld angle iron or box section on to the rear of each door. On the right-hand door, we weld a lock box to protect the padlock from being cut off by bolt-cutters. On this door, we also add a single locking rod. (some variants may have 2 locking rods- like the one pictured). There is a nominal charge for adding the second locking rod if you need it, and we’d ask you to specify this requirement when you place your order as we cannot retro-fit this option afterwards.
To increase the security of your container, we’d suggest using a good quality padlock like one or our Squire or CISA padlocks. Both these are pretty much industry standard in self-storage yards who use shipping containers thanks to their anti-drill/anti-pick key-ways and their anti-saw shackles.
Our flat panel doors are an ideal option for containers that are going to be open and closed many times everyday thanks to their light weight and single locking rod. However, if security is a major concern then you may want to consider the much thicker original shipping container door option.
We can also offer additional security measures if you believe that a standard shipping container does not offer the level of security required. We try not to publicise a lot of these extra options to prevent offering would be thieves an online database of security features to check. Please contact us to discuss the options if you feel yo need extra beefy security options.
The exact construction of these doors and hinges produced/used does vary by depot (each yard has a slightly different technique to fabricate these) so there may be slight differences on your flat panel door option than is shown in the images. As ever if you have any questions or need one specific feature let us know and we will always look to build this into your quote for you.
Lock boxes are a good visual deterrent and will secure your container beyond the reach of your average teenager or opportunist, but they won’t necessarily stop the most determined of thieves gaining access to a container. If you are using any container to store goods in, you may wish to consider adding one of our shipping container alarm, especially when the container is located in a secluded area.
If you need a storage container and if your unsure on any of the options, our friendly team are on hand 9am – 7pm weekdays and if you have any questions you are welcome to call us on freephone 0808 1234 215 at any time.
