45ft Shipping Containers for Sale
45ft shipping containers are the largest available size of shipping container in the UK, in this guide we detail everything you might want to know about 45ft containers and how to get best value if you are looking for a 45ft container.
Aren’t 60ft containers the really big ones?
60ft shipping containers do exist, but they are too large to move on any UK roads (and this is the same for most of Europe) 60ft containers are in use in the USA and Australia but they are not in common use worldwide.
In the Uk our road and rail infrastructure is not suitable for such containers, which is why a 45ft shipping container is the largest you will see in the Uk at this time and for the foreseeable future.
Sourcing 45ft Shipping containers in the UK for storage use
Commonly our first advise is that you will ordinarily receive much better value per square or cubic foot of storage space if you go for a 40ft container as opposed to a 45 ft container. quite commonly you will pay a circa 20%-30% premium on the container purchase price (when used) for the additional circa 12% of storage space when compared to a 40ft container.
However 45ft containers are quite rare and very commonly we may not have one in our nearest depot to you, where we are almost guaranteed to have stocks of 40fts in our nearest depot, as 40fts are the most common type of shipping container in circulation.
If you have a very specific project, or if you are refitting this into a shop unit or similar then the additional cost may still offer good value for you and make perfect sense, but if you are just looking for the best value, secure, dry storage a 40ft container will usually offer better overall value.
New and Used 45ft Container availability
Used 45ft containers will usually be available in a few major locations. We see them more commonly in Felixstowe, London and Liverpool, but they are by no means regularly in stock at these locations. If you are able to build in additional lead time this may give us a chance to source in the right stock locally.
We also have suppliers who can cabotage in a container for us (they send a container with freight into the UK and then give us the container afterwards) – we can commonly set this up for a wider range of locations and offers superb prices, but this can mean a 4-6 week wait for your shipping container which for a lot of customers will be too far away.
New 45ft containers are rarely held in stock and we may need to order them in from Europe at the time of your enquiry. Put very simply there just isn’t a strong enough market for new sales in the UK to justify holding stocks. Typically, we find new 45fts are best suited to high end conversions such as this cafe unit at dudley zoo. Such conversions will find the extra space very valuable, whereas a customer buying best value storage space may find the additional 5ft over a 40ft container quite expensive.
Single and bulk orders can be fulfilled by sending in stock from rotterdam or other majors ports in Europe, or very large bulk orders can be sourced direct from factory through us as may be required.
High Cubes and Standard height 45ft shipping containers
Typically nearly all 45ft shipping containers we see these days are high cubes. Most standard height 45ft containers have been replaced by high cubes in recent years meaning there are very few if any standard height 45ft containers in general use in the shipping industry. As shipping line often charge the same price to ship either a high cube or a standard height container, the standard height options have largely been phased out.
