Flat Pack Containers vs Shipping Containers
Shipping containers have long been used for domestic storage here in the UK. Their use for conversion works has increased over recent years. As people have seen, used or heard of shipping containers, they are often inclined to look at these for their own project.
However, shipping containers are not always the best option for every project, whether that be because of price, access or budget. If this is the case, our flat pack containers could be a great alternative for you.
As flat pack containers are a newer option, we often find customers do not know about these or do not trust them in the same way. However, flat packs are strong, sturdy units and ideal for many projects and uses.
Its not necessarily that a shipping container is better than a flat pack or vice versa, but there are factors which may mean one is a better choice for you.
Ease of Delivery
One very common reason customers consider or we recommend a flat pack is due to access. Shipping containers are generally delivered on a Hiab truck, which has a lot of requirements in order to offload the unit.
Delivering a Shipping Container

Shipping containers are generally delivered on large Hiab trucks (even small shipping containers!). Hiab trucks need a lot of space as well as overhead clearance. They often cannot drive over soft ground, like grass, unless the conditions are just right.
Hiabs will need to offload the container to the side of the truck bed. They can be lifted over some obstacles, but very tall or wide obstacles may prevent us from being able to offload (like a building!)
That’s not to say a shipping container delivery is tricky – large spaces with hard standing ground and no obstacles, delivery will be simple. Car parks, yards and industrial estates are very common, are generally straightforward.
We can also check access if you are unsure the site would be suitable.
Delivering a Flat Pack

Flat packs however, have very little issue with deliveries. There is not much that can stop a flat pack from being delivered.
As the units are flat packed, they do not need to be dropped directly where you want them. We will generally drop these kerbside and then you can move each panel into position and assemble in your own time.
There’s a number of ways to deliver flat pack containers, Hiabs, flat beds and 4×4 + trailers.
Even though we sometimes may use a hiab to deliver a flat pack we only drop these kerbside. Dropping kerbside means we do not have to be too worried with the exact position of the panels as they will be moved.
Flat beds and 4×4 deliveries will need a few hands to offload from the beds. We can also offer an installation service if you do not feel handy enough to assemble the unit yourself.
For Storage Use
Shipping containers are a great option for storage units. They are secure and wind and watertight offering a good space to store your things.
Flat pack containers are also an excellent choice for most storage needs. They are also secure and wind and watertight. They work especially well for customers looking to use these in their gardens, as often shipping containers will struggle to be delivered into most residential gardens due to limited access.
Many customers question whether a flat pack will be strong and secure enough to store their items. Most people know that shipping containers are made from very strong sturdy metal (Corten-Steel).
Shipping containers are incredibly strong, as they have been designed to take a beat on cargo ships, have forklifts in and out and be handled by heavy machinery. For domestic storage use, shipping containers are really above and beyond what is generally needed.
Flat pack containers are made from galvanised steel. This is still a very strong type of steel and for domestic storage use, so they are very secure. They come with a double locking system and a locking bar and padlock can also be added for extra security.
For Conversion Use
Converting shipping containers is a popular option now. Bars, catering units and offices are very common options for shipping container conversions.
Shipping containers are a great option for conversion projects as almost anything can be done to them. They can be modified in depot to create a unit bespoke to you, suiting your needs. We offer a range of standard conversion options to pick from. You can also come to us with your own ideas and we can work on your plans.
Flat packs on the other hand, don’t have as much versatility for creating bespoke units. We are unable to add any aftermarket modifications to flat packs. However, we do offer specific ranges which can work well instead of a fully converted unit.
We offer a range of flat pack offices and kiosks, with these there are also additional extras that can be added to help you create a unit that works for you.
These ranges of flat packs are great for customers on a budget, or for areas that a container delivery would be tricky. Events companies who go to festivals etc, often opt for flat packs as they can easily be moved on areas that a container could not be delivered.
Available Sizes
20ft and 40ft long units are the standard for shipping containers and will generally be the more cost-effective option vs flatpacks of the same size.

In between sizes would need to be cut down from larger shipping containers, which is very doable. However, these will come out more expensive than going for a standard sized shipping containers.
Flat packs are factory made in 2, 3, 4 and 6m lengths. Flatpacks are often a cost-effective option for smaller sized storage containers vs cut down shipping containers.
Flat packs can also be linked together to create wider or longer units, so if access is not suitable for a shipping container delivery, you can create a larger space with flat pack instead.
Joining traditional shipping containers is a more complex and costly project, although can also be done.
