1001 Uses for a Shipping Container #201: A Shipping Container Dairy

Our search for 1001 alternative uses for shipping containers continues, and number 201 will be popular with the cheese-lovers out there.  We recently discovered the amazing Perrystead Dairy in Philadelphia, USA where expert cheesemaker Yoav Perry produces his incredible cheeses in his very own shipping container dairy!

Yoav began his journey as a cheesemaker in Manhattan, New York before moving with his family to Philadelphia in 2016 where he set up his very own micro-dairy inside a reclaimed shipping container.

After relocating to Fishtown-Kensington, Philadelphia, Yoav secured a disused warehouse which he began renovating.  He also sourced a used 20ft high cube shipping container which he planned to convert into a dairy to be placed inside the warehouse.  The container was completely customised in New York by Don’s Dairy Supply Inc. – who are a specialist supplier of dairy equipment and bespoke shipping container dairies.  Working to Yoav’s specifications, they set about transforming the 20ft high cube container into a fully functioning creamery pod ready to be transported across the country and placed within the transformed warehouse in Philadelphia.

Converted to International Creamery Standard

The shipping container creamery is the heart of the operation. It was converted to meet the necessary international industry standards and kitted out with anti-microbial walls, while the floors were specially treated with a resilient cementitious coating so that the environment can be kept entirely sterile and can be fully washed down at the end of each day.  The cementitious floor material can stand up to cold and hot washes as well as acids and alkalines without cracking or stripping.

A HEPA air filtration system was also installed with negative/positive air pressure. Water and electric systems were added before the container creamery was ready to be installed in its new home!

Completing the shipping container dairy took around 7 months, it was then transported from New York to Philadelphia and installed inside Yoav’s warehouse. The container was built offsite so that the conversion into a dairy could happen at the same time at the warehouse renovation. Once completed, in Yoav’s words “[The container dairy] was rolled right into the warehouse, connected to water, sewage and electricity. Within a week we got our permits and were making cheese!”.

The hole in the warehouse wall was a very tight fit, and the floor was at a sloping angle so to fit it inside it had to be placed onto rollers before using a jack to fit it precisely over the specially made floor drain.  The delivery process took 3 painstaking hours!

Perrystead Dairy produces their extremely popular handmade cheeses using traditional techniques combined with modern implementations, they source all of their grass-fed milk from local Philadelphia farmers, and their cheese is now sold countrywide across the USA.  Every other Friday (twice a month) they host their popular Foodmaker market days which attract visitors from far and wide thanks to the area’s large community of artisan food producers.  Yoav has turned his talent and passion into a fantastic artisan business – a perfect example of how a shipping container can be converted into a unique premises for a start-up, that can develop and grow with your business!
