Small Shipping Containers

Small shipping containers (less than 20ft long) are ideal if you only have a few things to store or a small space available for the container to sit. In this article we discuss the smaller shipping container types available.

It’s important to mention first that any containers less than 20ft long will often have a similar price to standard 20ft shipping containers, so if you do have space for a 20ft this will often be the most cost effective option, even if you might not class this as a small shipping container. The reason for this is that 20ft shipping containers are the smallest size of container still used in the shipping industry. 10ft and smaller units can be used, but modern port equipment can only lift and move a 10ft container if its bolted together with another 10ft to make a 20ft unit. Most boats, trucks and rail waggons are no longer built with 10ft container capacity either, hence it will typically cost a lot more to ship a single 10ft than a single 20ft container around the world.

However, we do realise that many of our customers don’t have space for bigger shipping containers. For that reason we have a number of clever ways to ensure we can offer a range of cost effective smaller shipping containers for everyday domestic, for light industrial or for commercial  use.

New Small Shipping Containers

We have a regular supply of new shipping containers from China that we ship into the UK especially for the domestic secure storage market. From these we make up a small batch of 10ft containers and, to keep cost down moving these around the UK, we also build some 8ft containers that go inside the 10fts and some 6ft containers inside the 8fts. Known in the industry as Russian Dolls, these small shipping containers get shipped around the UK inside each other. This not only keeps the costs down, but as the smaller ones are not exposed to the elements during transit they arrive in near perfect condition.10ft new build shipping container for sale 2

These new shipping containers are ideal for a wide range of uses. As they are original factory made containers they are all safe to be lifted when loaded with heavy weights. The exact capacity will vary between units but, commonly, these are safe to lift with circa 10 tonnes or more of cargo inside, plenty more than most people can fit inside!

These almost new containers are clean and tidy and in virtually immaculate order. There may be some minor scrapes that occurred during their first trip over from China, but we would never sell a container with any significant damage as new. These ranges commonly come in plain green or blue, but we can always repaint and modify as may be required for a specific customer or project.

We also have a range of small Galvanised Shipping Containers. These are constructed slightly differently but offer great value for anyone wanting smart, clean secure storage.

Used Small Shipping Containers

Used shipping containers smaller than 20ft long are pretty rare. The container shipping industry stopped making these some time ago. This means that used small shipping containers are in very short supply. They only really come into the marketplace when someone who has previously purchased one wishes to sell it. There are no regular supplies of stock in the same way as with standard 20ft and 40ft containers.

When we can get hold of them these smaller shipping containers still need to come into our depot to get checked and repaired, and with the additional costs of pickup, this can often mean when we have one available for sale, it will not a whole lot cheaper than your basic used 20ft shipping container. As we mentioned earlier, if you have the space available a 20ft shipping container will often be the best value option. If you don’t have space for a bigger shipping container, we can also offer a very neat and reliable source of refurbished small shipping containers.

Refurbished Small Shipping Containers

Our range of small refurbished shipping containers are all made by cutting down larger 40ft shipping containers into sections. We fabricate our own doors from sheet steel (the steel we use is as least as thick as the steel in the corrugated sides of the container ensuring security is not compromised). A high security lock box (padlock cover) is also added and the container is repainted in your choice of colour.

10ft refurbished containerWe can make refurbished containers anywhere from 6ft deep up to and over 20ft long. Whilst there is a small tolerance in the length when we make them of approx 120mmn / 1ft (we need to work with the corrugations inside the shipping container when cutting it), if we know to make it as close to a certain length but not over, or it need to be big enough to store a certain sized item we will make it to measure for you.

As we make these refurbished containers to order they are highly customizable. We can easily make a container to fit in a certain sized gap, or make a container designed to house a specific sized item.

Our small refurbished containers will usually be a similar price to a basic used 20ft shipping container due to the additional costs involved in cutting up and modifying a shipping container. However, these smaller containers come with a repaint and a high security lock box included as standard, so they can offer a slightly neater overall appearance if your shipping container needs to be on display.
