White 20ft HC Side Opening Shipping Container for Export
We regularly repaint shipping containers for our customers. It’s a very popular option, to smarten up the unit or make it match your branding. Most often, we repaint units that will be used for storage or conversion works. Every now and then, we will have a customer who wants to repaint a unit and still be able to export it.
In the Spring of 2023 we supplied an engineering company with a 20′ high side opening shipping container, repainted in white for them to ship abroad. Repainting a shipping container for export does have a few requirements to meet in order to be shipped.
Shipper Legible Repaint White

Most one trip containers in the UK are either green or blue. In this case, the customer wanted a white container as the unit would be exported abroad and would then live out it’s life in a hot country. They chose a white paint as they wanted it to help reflect the heat once abroad.
With our standard repaints, we would just spray the whole unit in the customers choice of colour, but this wouldn’t work for this customer. In order to ship a container, the shipping markings and CSC plate need to be visible. If we were to do our standard paint job, all of this would be painted over.
There are two ways to repaint a container and have it still be suitable for shipping. For this customer we chose to do the most cost-effective option. Before respraying, the shipping info and CSC plate were masked off.
The other option would have been to remove all the decals, repaint and then reapply the decals to the container.
With this container, we also masked off the locking bars and door seals. This gives the unit the smartest overall finish.
Ply Lining and Insulation
As the unit was destined for sunnier weather, the customer wanted to insulate the container. Shipping containers are prone to condensation build up and there are a few ways to combat this. This customer chose to have the unit insulated with rockwool and then ply lining over the top.
Being in a hot country, the chance of the unit having condensation building up was high. The temperature outside will drop over night, which can cause condensation to form. Some hotter countries are also humid, so this would increase the formation too.
20HC Side Opening Shipping Container

Side opening units are a more specialised unit and less readily available than standard end opening units. The addition of side doors on the containers allows people to store or ship items that would be too large to go through the end cargo doors. They are also popular for quick and easy pallet storage.
To maximise on the space, our customer opted for a high cube container. As a high cube, the container is 9’6 high, compared to standard height units which are 8’6. This is great for oversized items that won’t get through the end doors.
Side opening containers are a fairly new design, and not used in large amounts by shipping lines. This means they are only available as one trip units. One trip units will be around a year old and come with a circa 5year CSC plate for export use.
White Shipping Container Delivered to Portsmouth
The repaint and lining were completed in our London conversion depot. Once the unit was completed, we delivered the container straight to the customer at their site in Portsmouth. Once on site, they got to work packing the container ready for export out of the UK.
