1001 Uses for a Shipping Container #205: A Lair for an Alpaca Sound System
It’s a problem I’m sure we’ll all face at some point in our lives – where to keep an Alpaca Sound System when you’re not using it!
The answer, of course, is a 20ft side opening container. With bi-fold doors along one full side it’s perfect for storage of all sorts of animal-themed* home party set-ups. Side opening shipping containers are available as one-trip units from various depot locations nationwide. If you (or your Alpaca) could use this conveniently accessed storage option please contact us for a quote.
This amazing one-of-a-kind Alpaca Sound System was created by David Cranmer, also known as ‘Nervous Squirrel’. It features a radio controlled life-sized alpaca mounted on 5.5AP petrol engine powered caterpillar tracks, with a 3m wide 5800w sound system including two 18″ subwoofers. I really hope that its owner lives in a very remote area or has sympathetic neighbours!
Dave made this fantastic beast after needing a way of providing music outdoors for a party. He usually makes a sculpture to unveil over each August bank holiday weekend, and had wanted to make some caterpillar tracks for a while. Finding a fibreglass alpaca was the last piece of the puzzle, and so the project just had to be made.
Nervous Squirrel make all sorts of wonderous one-off machines, instruments and art pieces including my personal favourite the Cluckminster Fuller – a giant metal geometric chicken (if you look carefully you might be able to make this out in one of the pictures). Need an Octopus machine, a radioactive xylophone or a life-sized fibreglass steam train with retractable horns? Dave’s your man. Check out his website nervoussquirrel.com for these and many more one-of-a-kind creations.
With its custom-made caterpillar tracks and radio controlled petrol engine the Alpaca can make its own way from its container home to your chosen party spot. It can also be used where it is with the containers side doors fully opened. There’s even a DJ booth fitted into the shipping container. When the party’s over there’s no need to dismantle anything, simply drive the Alpaca back into its shipping container home and close the doors – it’ll be kept safe and dry until the next time it’s called upon for spontaneous partying!
*At 8½ feet tall (or 9½ feet for a High Cube) a shipping container will be suitable for most creature-based sound systems, however Elephant or Giraffe systems may require something larger.
