Shipping Container Bicycle Repair Shop
We were tasked with creating a bicycle repair shop using a shipping container for the London Borough of Havering’s Myplace youth and community centre.
Recycled Shipping Container for Havering
Using a used 40ft DV (standard height) shipping container, the client wanted the unit to be 30ft in length. Recycling or re-purposing a shipping makes great use of a used unit and very little goes to waste. In fact, the remaining 10ft piece was made into a refurbished 10ft container.
30ft shipping containers used to be in common use but are no longer used by shipping companies to move fright. Fortunately we are one of the few companies to regularly cut down 40ft shipping containers to 30ft long as well as offering other custom length options.
Shipping Container Workshop fit-out
The unit was insulated using Rockwool or an equivalent insulating material then lined using 6mm ply. We then fabricated workbenches, shelving and a secure, lockable, cupboard for tool storage, and we fitted a high security personnel door. Finally, electrics were installed in the unit for lighting and power.
Hiab delivery of the bicycle repair container
A Hiab equipped vehicle was used to deliver the container on to a site that was narrow. In fact, some hauliers refused to even attempt to make the delivery. As you can see from the images, the container was located on the corner of a plot. The client had followed our instructions and laid concrete support foundations that were completely level so the cargo doors and personnel door on the unit would open and close without issue. This is a good example of a client who did all the work prior to delivery meaning we could simply drop the unit in place and not have to re-lift it whilst height adjustments were made to the corner supports.
About the client
Myplace is a youth and community centre serving the local community for educational, health, cultural and social activities.
The centre has a performance hall, sound recording studio, games room, café, art room, workshop, health rooms and a computer suite.
The Youth Service provides a packed programme of activities for young people to enjoy. This includes youth clubs, a range of sports, Duke of Edinburgh awards, youth action, music, and arts projects.
The bicycle repair container has been added to helps young people learn about bicycle repair, to understand more about tools and to provide them with essential, transferable life skills that will set them in good stead for the future.
