Shipping Container Roller Shutter Conversion, Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham
Kiwa is a World top twenty leader in Testing, Inspection, and Certification. Kiwa works within many industries including construction, energy supply, food, healthcare, and so many other markets! Kiwa approached us in June 2022 looking for a one-trip 20ft shipping container with side access, which would be used to store palletised wood logs to be used to test wood-burning stoves. We delivered their converted side access shipping container to their office in Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham.
As this shipping container was to be used to store wood logs, condensation control was an important factor. The logs needed to be at a specific moisture content in order to be used in testing. Side access was also important to the client as they needed easy access to the container daily and access for a forklift to be able to get in and out to move the pallets.
Electric Roller Shutter
For this job, an electric roller shutter was the best option as Kiwa needed full side access in order to easily reach the pallets they were storing in their shipping container. Often roller shutters are the cheapest option for full-side access shipping containers. Only a small number of side-opening shipping containers are being made currently, making them pretty expensive. We do have a handy article about alternatives to side opening shipping containers on our website.
Roller shutters are particularly useful for shipping container conversions to easy full-side access storage. Our roller shutters are built in either our London or Manchester depots and can either be manually or electrically operated. Manual shutters are only available as a smaller version, as trying to manually use a full-side shutter is pretty much impossible due to the weight of the shutter.
When we install a roller shutter we remove one side of the shipping container and fixed the shutter to the internal or external roof of the container. If mounted internally, you would lose some headroom from inside your container. When the shutter is mounted externally, you won’t lose any headroom inside your shipping container, but you do lose the ability to stack anything on top of your shipping container.
Our roller shutters are made to order and can be customised to fit your project. We can paint the roller shutter any basic colour, usually, this is done to match the colour of the container or the colour scheme of a company/project. As you can see from the photos, in the case of Kiwa’s shipping container conversion the electric roller shutter was left with its original metal finish.

Ply Lining and Insulating a Shipping Container
As the photos show, this shipping container was also ply lined and insulated. Ply lining and insulation is a very popular modification as it offers condensation control and makes your shipping container look a lot smarter and much less industrial inside.
The shipping container’s existing cargo doors can be sealed off, giving a much better internal finish on the ply lining. In the case of Kiwa’s converted shipping container, they still wanted their cargo doors to be operational to give them additional access to their container. Shipping container cargo doors are thicker than the rest of the container walls, so often when ply lining we don’t line the cargo doors as they don’t have as much condensation build-up.
Kiwa chose to have their shipping container ply lined and insulated as they needed to control the amount of condensation in the shipping container, as the moisture content of the logs being stored inside needed to be closely monitored.
We’d like to thank Kiwa for coming to us with this project and hopefully, their roller shutter side access shipping container is giving them the easy access they desired.
