Shipping Containers for Industrial Storage
Shipping Containers are literally made for industrial storage! Ever since containers were invented in 1956 they have been used for static storage as well as shipping. In the years since all sorts of variants have come into use, so we now have a range of options with different door configurations and sizes to suit any use.
What can I store in a Shipping Container?
Shipping Containers can be used for storage of pretty much anything, after all, the chances are that most items will have been shipped to this country in one! Some items are more susceptible to moisture however, and this will need to be considered if you are storing paperwork, fabrics or anything else that will be damaged by water.
What Shipping Container Types Are Available?
The two most common types of container are a standard 20ft or 40ft unit. These have a width of 8ft and height of 8ft 6ins. They have full-width doors on one end, and will be the cheapest option available. We can produce custom lengths if needed by cutting down larger containers. Some containers are made with an extra foot in height (9ft 6ins), these are known as high cubes. In addition to these options we can also supply tunnel containers (doors at both ends), side opening containers, open top containers and tank containers, as well as other specialist options and bespoke builds.
We can supply most containers in used, refurbished, or one-trip condition, please refer to our post on this link for a clear description of the differences.
Condensation in Shipping Containers
Being essentially a large metal box, temperature fluctuations can cause condensation to form in a shipping container. This can drip down onto your contents below and could cause damage to items that need to be kept dry. There are several means of combating this ‘container rain’, our recommended option is one of our self-fit insulation kits, which provide excellent protection at a reasonable cost. If your container will be heavily used then we would suggest full ply lining and insulation, this is considerably more expensive, but the ply will protect the layer of insulation underneath from damage when loading or unloading the container. Further information on condensation prevention can be found on our post on this link.
Are Shipping Containers Weatherproof?
In a word – yes. Containers are designed to transport cargo in the most hostile conditions on the planet, so are well designed against ingress of rain or wind. However, as they get older they can require some maintenance to stay that way. We would suggest checking over your containers on scheduled basis to check against any leaks. How often you need to do this will depend on the age and condition of your containers. We provide a 12 month wind and watertight guarantee with all our container sales, so within this time frame you can simply call us up and we will rectify at no cost to you. After the 12 month period has expired we will still be happy to advise on repairs free of charge. It may be that we can quote for an engineer to attend, otherwise we will be able to advise on the best way to complete works yourself, or what tradesmen to approach for assistance.
Why use Shipping Containers for Storage?
The key benefit that using shipping containers for industrial storage is flexibility. Warehouse and storage space can be expensive, using shipping containers allows a customer to increase storage space quickly and easily. This can be very useful and cost effective for a company with large seasonal fluctuations in trade, with a large contract that calls for extra storage space, or for a business that is expanding beyond the space it has available. We have several customers that use spare outdoor space for storage containers and are able to manage this effectively by increasing and decreasing the number of containers they have to cope with changing demand.
Storage of Dangerous Products and Chemicals
Certain storage uses require containers to particular specifications. We have experience in building bunded containers for storage of chemicals, containers suitable for storage of Lithium Ion batteries, containers for storage of explosives, as well as containers for all sorts of specialist uses unique to particular customers. We will be very happy to quote for containers modified in this way, please contact us to discuss in detail.
