Electric Roller Shutters in 20ft Shipping Containers

Electric roller shutters are becoming a very popular conversion option for our customers.

We fit our electric roller shutters in our conversion depots prior to sending out your containers. The shutters can be installed at any height, and up to 17ft wide in a 20ft container. Made from galvanised steel they offer secure, long lasting access into your shipping container.

The shutter boxes can be fitted internally, externally and even on top of the container to give you the most head room possible inside..

There are many reasons why a customer may chose to fit an electric roller shutter door in the side of a container, they are often used in catering units, market stalls and workshops. They also work as an alternative for side opening units.

Alternative to Side Access Shipping Containers

Side opening shipping containers are very popular. They offer full unobstructed access through the side of the container. Generally they are very popular for easy pallet storage or for oversized items which are too large to go through the standard 8′ end cargo doors.

They are also popular with general storage customers.  Easily accessing items through the side, instead of having to pull all items out from the front to get to the items in the back.

Factory made side access units are not widely used by shipping lines, so there is not an abundance of these units on the market. This does mean they come at a premium price when available.

Fitting a roller shutter in the side of a end opening container can be a cost-effective alternative option. Electric roller shutters can be fitted in almost any container – used, refurbished or new. This means you have a few options to help you meet a budget that works for you. One of our more popular options is our 20ft refurbished shipping container with full side access roller shutter.

Left Hand Side Access Roller Shutter

Electric roller shutters are custom fitted. This means you can have a unit that suits your site configuration perfectly. Factory made side opening shipping containers now only come as right hand opening. There has previously been left hand opening units in the market, but these are very uncommon now.

In some sites having access to the right hand side of a container may not work. This was the case for one of our customers. They wanted a left hand side opening shipping container as a right hand unit would not work with the set up they had.

We searched for a left hand side opening unit, but none were on the market. In the end we came up with another solution – a 17′ electric roller shutter.

We took a one trip shipping container and fitted an electric roller shutter in the left hand side. This was a simple, cost-effective solution to give our customer a unit that worked in the space they had and met their needs where a factory made shipping container could not.

Replacing Cargo Doors on a Shipping Container with a Roller Shutter

Roller shutters can be used to replace the original cargo doors. This is a less common conversion as it doesn’t give any added access. However, there are reasons why replacing the cargo doors would be a good option for some customers.

If a container is sitting in specific position that does not give enough space for the cargo doors to open fully, a roller shutter is a good alternative. The shutter rolls into the shutter box out of the way unlike cargo doors which will site another 4ft from the end of the container.

Electric roller shutters are also easy to open. While cargo doors are not hard to open, they are not as simple as a standard house door. All you’d have to do to with an electric roller shutter is turn a key.

We supplied a customer with a grey refurbished shipping container with electric roller shutters replacing the cargo doors. By fitting the shutter in a refurbished unit, we were able to keep the costs lower.

Serving Hatches for Shipping Containers

A custom sized half height roller shutter can be the perfect serving hatch for a catering pod. We’ve done a few of these serving hatches over the years and they are a great alternative to our steel serving hatches with gas struts. A roller shutter offers a very sleek, smart looking hatch which is easy to use.

We built a 20HC cladded catering unit with a small roller shutter serving hatch for local school Studley High School.

Prices for Shipping Containers with Roller Shutters

Prices for a roller shutter will vary. It will depend on the size of the roller shutter we need to fit, aka the width and height of the opening needed. It may seem obvious but the bigger a roller shutter is, the more expensive it is for us to buy in before we fit it for you.

Additional doors or moving cargo doors on a shipping container (if its an access door you need) are popular options.
