Shipping Container Laboratory Aboard a Boat for Marine Data Collection

Shipping container conversions are becoming very popular. In the summer of 2024, we were approached by Benthic Solutions who had a unique place for their converted container – on board a boat!

Benthic Solutions Limited is an independent marine environmental consultancy and survey company, providing services to the offshore industry globally. BSL specialise in conducting versatile environmental surveys, with a focus on environmental baseline studies and habitat assessments. BSL’s work spans from shallow to deepwater surveys, utilising a wide range of specified equipment including benthic grabs for seabed sampling and subsea camera systems for detailed environmental assessments.

Offshore Laboratory Container

The office container was designed to serve as an onboard laboratory for processing sediment samples and reviewing camera footage. BSL selected this container for its compact size, making it easy to transport while also minimizing its deck footprint, and still offering ample workspace for sample processing. Its robust construction makes it ideal for offshore environments, and the built-in lighting allows for 24-hour operations.

It has already been successfully deployed on a nearshore vessel in the North Sea. It has completed two successful environmental campaigns focused on subsea cable routes. As a laboratory container, this unit will be used all over the world by marine scientists studying the wonders of the underwater environment. 

10ft Shipping Container Office Conversion

For this office, we modified a 10ft one trip container. For conversion works, one trip units are a great option. They are very smart and also offer great long term use and value.

Although 10′ containers are not widely used for shipping, they are very popular for storage and conversion projects where space is limited.

We offer standard office conversions, but these can all be modified to suit your needs. While this unit was to be used as a laboratory, the spec BSL gave us was very similar to our 10ft premium office. Container offices are great for temporary set ups or remote sites (including boats!)

In this case, BSL needed a weather protected cable hole port to allow for power in and data out. They also opted for a Celotex insulation foam, instead of our standard rockwool insulation. A melamine lining was also fitted to offer the best internal finish.

The cargo doors were also left operational. This allows BSL to move larger lab equipment in and out of the converted container with ease.

Working from BSL’s plan, we fitted a steel personnel door and a window with steel security shutters. Electrics were also fitted, these are done so that the unit is ready to go once on site – just plug in and go!

Shipping Container Conversion Delivered to Norfolk

This conversion was completed in our East London yard. We were able to meet BSLs deadline and delivered the container to their site in Norfolk in 4 weeks!

BSL completed the final works and added in all the additional elements needed for their boats laboratory. Once the fit out was finished, the lab was loaded onto the boat and began it’s first journey to the North Sea.
