Vented Shipping Container for Reigate Sea Cadets
Reigate Sea Cadets in Redhill approached us in July 2021 needing a storage container for their site in Surrey. This container would be used to store a boat and other items that may be put away wet, so air movement and ventilation would be key.
Sea Cadets – Enabling young people for over 160 years
The Sea Cadets organisation was started in 1856 to provide nautical skills and training to the orphans of the Crimean War to help them build a future. Originally known as the Naval Lads’ Brigade, Queen Victoria became patron in 1899 and Queen Elizabeth II is still patron today. Sea Cadets credit the organisation with improving their confidence, skills and qualifications as well as providing fun activities and adventures. Controlling Moisture in Shipping Containers
When loading goods into a container it’s very important to minimise moisture getting into it as this can cause condensation. In this case however the Sea Cadets were going to be keeping a boat and other items, which may well be wet when put away. For this reason some ventilation would be required to allow this moisture to escape the container. Otherwise the moisture can get trapped inside which will enable an environment where damp and mould can cause damage to the stored items.
It was decided to add 2 louvre vents to the container, each measuring 350mm x 350mm. One was placed low down at one end of the container, the other was positioned high up on the opposite side and end to give maximum air movement. We can add ventilation to a shipping container to suit your needs, standard sizes for vents go right up to 600mm x 600mm and we can have even larger ones made if required. Easy to use Shipping Container Doors
As the container was to be used by young sea cadets they also specified flat panel doors for the container. The standard cargo doors can be heavy and stiff so it was felt that the flat panel doors would be easier for younger people to use. We commonly use this door style when making custom sized shipping containers by cutting down larger units and are also happy to supply them on request if you have concerns about using the standard doors.
Shipping Container Delivered to Reigate with Hiab offload
Once the vents and flat panel doors had all been fitted this container was painted in RAL 5017, traffic blue, to match with the Sea Cadets colour scheme. It was delivered to the car park of the Reigate Cadets facility in September 2021 with a Hiab equipped vehicle capable of placing it in the exact spot needed. We hope that it serves as useful ventilated storage space for many years to come.
