10ft Shipping Container Used For Operations on a Vessel
In early 2025, we were tasked by a customer to provide a 10ft shipping container that had been converted into an operations room for use on a vessel that carries out marine surveys. In this case study we look at this job and process where we convert a shipping container into an operations room for a vessel.
Converted Shipping Container, Onboard a Vessel
We regularly convert shipping containers to allow for a near infinite number of uses for customers. You can find more information on what conversions we offer here.
They can be both to change the use of a container, but also it might be you just want to change the way your container looks.
We get all sorts of enquiries that request for us to change a shipping container to something you would never think it could be used for. In this case the containers conversions needed to suit the use of operations on a boat. Therefore this 10ft needed certain things installed for it to function this way.
Converting A Shipping Container Into An Operations Office
A shipping container is an ideal option for a control room that will sit on the deck of a seagoing vessel. Shipping containers are built from CORT-TEN steel, commonly referred to as ‘weathering steel’ and they are much better placed to deal with the harsh saltwater conditions than mild steel. They are commonly available and very cost effective for the performance.
As it was being used as a room we needed to remove the cargo doors and replace it with a corrugated panel and fitted a personnel door for easy access, as well as an antivandal window. From this point we have the shell of the operations room.
The customer requested to have it painted white. This would be because it would be out in the open water to reflect the sun, helping to keep it cool.
This unit was lined and insulated and had electrics installed, including some lights on the interior. Melamine lining inside is a great option for a unit like this as can be wiped clean – great for spaces that will get wet or get messy.
With a basic operations room ready, the rest could be fitted out by the customer, adding any equipment needed for the research / surveys the vessel would be performing.
10ft One Trip Shipping Container Control Room

This customer decided to make their operations control room out of a 10ft one trip container. Containers, when used for shipping, come at a standard size of both 20ft and 40ft. This means if someone requests a new quality 10ft container they are a bit harder to come by. People are often surprised to find out that 10ft containers cost more than a 20ft. They might even cost more than a used 40ft. This is why we always recommend a 20ft container if you have the space available on site.
However, a 10ft container is perfect when you are limited on space, like on a boat!
10ft Shipping Container Delivered to Penryn
We delivered this 10ft shipping container in spring of 2025, to a town in Cornwall called Penryn, near Falmouth. This was delivered with one of our crane equipped trucks that allows the container to be offloaded and put on the ground. We delivered to the port, and the customer than loaded and installed their operations room on the vessel themselves once fully kitted out.
